The news pages of recent weeks have highlighted the “scandal Mose” which highlighted a supposed system of bribes behind the construction of one of the most advanced and complex works in recent years.

What we want to emphasize is the importance of engineering Mose system that aims to the final resolution of the problem of high water in Venice.

Mose (Experimental Electromechanical Module) is a system designed and developed exclusively for the capital of the Veneto region, made ​​up of a series of mobile gates retractable placed at the port inlets connecting the lagoon to the open sea.

The operation at the conceptual level is very simple: these gates, consisting primarily of metal box-like structures of variable size, are connected by hinges in concrete caissons that ensure the movement. In the normal course of the tide, gates remain lying on the bottom of the boxes using just the force of gravity exerted by the water in the same; when instead there is a situation of high tide, the system, using a jet of compressed air, provides to expel water from the gates which, emptying, earn as the surface of the water acting as a real dams. The closing time of the various mouths of the port is estimated between four and five hours and, for this reason, it was decided to bring closure to the tides above 110 cm. In order not to cause damage to the flourishing maritime trade of the “Serenissima” were designed in tandem to Mose, navigation locks that allow the passage of ships with the system in operation.

What makes the this work very interesting is the flexibility with which it can be used. The hosts, set at different inlets, are in fact independent and they can start operating at different times according to the real needs of the city’s defense. The construction work began in 2003 and reached 87% of completion, which is scheduled for 2016.

Mose is an innovative work that uses relatively simple concepts but that required a huge cost of construction, from the initial € 2 billion, they arrived at an expense that is around 6. No shortage of controversy around this great work that could however permanently solve the problem of high water in Venice and ensure their survival.
